What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root which acts as an anchor for replacement teeth. Shaped like a screw, it is surgically placed into the jawbone in order to secure a replacement tooth or bridge in place. Implants are stable and permanent and are not reliant on neighboring teeth for support. They are an ideal tooth replacement procedure because they look and feel like natural teeth.

Implants are great for patients who are unable to wear dentures. Instead, the implant is placed directly into the jawbone to support permanently cemented bridges. Implants can be made from several different types of metallic and bone-like ceramic materials that are compatible with body tissue. When surgically anchored into the jawbone, the implant fuses with living bone in a process known as “osseointegration”.

If you’re missing one tooth, a single tooth implant procedure may be an option. A dental implant offers a permanent solution for a missing tooth and it looks and feels like a natural tooth. Replacing your tooth with a dental implant has many advantages over alternative options.

  • Implants preserve the health of remaining teeth
  • A dental implant provides stimulation that helps you avoid the deterioration of bone and soft tissue in the area.
  • Dental implants feel more like natural teeth since they replace the entire dental structure from the roots up
  • Implants last 30 or more years.  Other options such as dental bridges need replacement or restoration after 10 years

Multiple tooth dental implants are a great option for patients that are missing 2 or more teeth.  Multiple tooth implants can be next to each other or in different areas of the mouth.

If you have more than one missing tooth and still have healthy gums, a multiple implant is the best option.  In the video above, two fixtures are implanted and the bridge is attached filling in the gap.

If you are missing all of your teeth, dental implants may be the best option for restoring the functionality of your mouth.   Without teeth in your mouth there is no bone growth and your body senses that the jawbone is no longer required and it starts to dissolve away which can lead to full facial collapse.

As the bone dissolves, the following may occur:

  • lips cave in as they lose support from facial muscles
  • the lower part of the face will shrivel and create a witch-like chin
  • wrinkles around the mouth will become more dramatic
  • a person may look 20 years older than they are

Health Issues Due to Missing All Your Teeth

Not only is eating and talking more difficult without teeth, there are many other issues that can result from missing teeth.  Gum disease can develop in the mouth which can lead to other health problems such as:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Stroke
  • Adverse pregnancy outcomes
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic respiratory disease

Replacing Dentures with Dental Implants in our Toronto office

In the past when people were missing all of their teeth they were limited to two options: bare gums or dentures.  Both of these options can have However, both of these options have numerous disadvantages. Bare gums result in a collapsed face, extreme difficulty eating and speaking, physical changes that make a person look 20 years older, and self-esteem and quality of life issues.

The disadvantages of dentures:

  • Dentures are uncomfortable and can be painful
  • Some denture adhesives contain chemicals bad for you health
  • Denture can affect your taste
  • Dentures can cause bad breath
  • Crunchy or chewy food can be very difficult to eat
  • Dentures can make you self-consciousness

Advantages of Dental Implants

Comfort Level – Most denture wearers experience discomfort at one point or another because over time gum tissues tend to shrink leaving the denture with a loose fit. This instability can cause gum irritation and mouth sores. Adjustments are usually needed over the life of the denture due to gum and jaw bone shrinkage. To achieve the best fit, denture wearers must use messy dental adhesive. Upper dentures also have a tendency to affect the taste of foods because the palate is covered. On the other hand, dental implants are permanent, natural looking and very functional. Implants also offer the same force for biting as natural teeth and do not interfere with the taste of food.

Confidence Level – Dentures tend to slip, restricting the wearers ability to talk and eat. For a person with dental implants, he or she never has to fear these kinds of embarrassing moments. Properly placed implants are stable and function just like natural tooth roots.

Durability – Although dentures are strong enough to last a lifetime, dentures do nothing to prevent the shrinkage of bone and gum mass, often resulting in the need for refittings or replacements. Gum and bone shrinkage also causes a change in the bite, and wear and tear of the denture chewing surface. Dental implants actually help preserve the patient’s gum and bone mass. Implants are permanent, dependable and are a life long solution to missing teeth
